Overview

Cambridge Bay is currently the administrative and business centre of the Kitikmeot region.  Nestled among rolling hills and tundra, Cambridge Bay is located on Victoria Island and represents an important stop for ships traversing the Northwest Passage.

Inuit have lived in the Cambridge Bay area for 4000 years continuously as it has represented an excellent hunting and fishing spot.  European contact began in 1839 and grew steadily as the quest for the Northwest Passage heated up.  Roald Amundsen’s ship, the “Maud” sank in Cambridge Bay and has been a local landmark for decades.  However, there is currently a plan to have the wreckage returned to Norway.

The military has maintained a presence in Cambridge Bay since 1947 with the construction of a large LORAN tower.  This was followed in 1955 by the construction of a “Distant Early Warning Line” base in the community.

Local people were nomadic hunting, trapping and fishing people until the construction of a Catholic mission in 1954 followed by other government services in the early 1960s.

Cambridge Bay today is known for its excellent fishing and abundance of wildlife- including a Muskox herd nearby.
