Overview

Baker Lake is located at the Geographical Centre of Canada and is Nunavut’s only inland community.

Baker Lake represents a collection of eleven groups of Inuit who originally lived throughout the Kivalliq and Kitikmeot Regions.  The community of Baker Lake was started with the establishment of the Hudson’s Bay Post in 1916.  The post was followed by the establishment of an Anglican Mission in 1927.

Rich with culture, wildlife and mineral resources, Baker Lake is a well established community with excellent services.  Known as the access point to the Thelon River Game Sanctuary, and the Thelon and Kazan Hertitage Rivers.  Thousands of Caribou, Muskox, Wolves and Foxes are nearby.

Baker Lake is also the gateway to the Meadowbank Gold Mine, owned by Agnico-Eagle Mines.  The mine is located 86 kms north of the community, and is linked by a road- Nunavut’s longest.

The economy of Baker Lake is strong.  Dominated by employment and spending at the nearby mine and exploration projects, Baker Lake is also a major centre for Government of Nunavut operations.

The community is located on the edge of Baker lake, and is surrounded by rolling hills.  In the summertime, Baker Lake’s distinctive pink gravel roads make Baker Lake an extremely photogenic community.
